Joinery 101 – The Basics

What is Joinery?

Joinery (“millwork” in North America) is a catch-all term for woodwork. In interior design, it very frequently refers to built-in fixtures constructed from wood surfaces, such as built-in shelving, wood vanities, custom kitchen cabinets, and closets.

Loose furniture items (such as dressers, freestanding bookcases, tables & nightstands) constructed from wood are usually not considered part of an interior design project’s joinery scope. These would be part of the FFE scope, or furniture design scope, even though this furniture-making shares many of the same technical and construction qualities as a piece of joinery.
